It's hard to figure out what the KGT can't do. Its plus-hp engine is capable of breathtaking acceleration, and its sophisticated shaft-drive chassis with available adjustable-on-the-fly suspension is fully at home decimating the backroads, droning the interstates or anything in between.

Sport-touring can be the most challenging segment of the sport, since it tries to combine the best from opposite ends of the streetbike spectrum, but for the KGT, it's a no-brainer.

Harley-Davidson Is Developing a Supercharger.A TWO-SEAT touring motorcycle without a passenger backrest or top luggage case, it occurs to me, is a vehicle with the everyday practicality of a backless hospital gown. There just seems to be something missing, you know? Indeed, whack open the throttle with a passenger aboard, as I did recently while entering a freeway, and you might wonder if your companion could possibly hang on for the sprint through the gears.

Who besides the operator really wants to tour at triple digits? The K designation signifies an in-line 4-cylinder engine, which in this case positions the cylinders transversely across the frame, like most Japanese in-line 4s. The engine of the original K bikes, introduced in the mids, was aligned front to back, with the cylinders canted over horizontally, parallel to the ground. The KLT, a comfort-oriented touring model, still uses this layout. The temptation is to say the KGT is all about its engine.

Top speed is somewhere north of miles an hour — a speed at which you can run confidently and comfortably though illegally, in most places given the right roads. Though in the KGT this powerplant makes just horsepower, it is still enough to be the benchmark of the sport-touring class.

Beyond the high-performance aspects, though, there is also a high-tech factor that enhances the appeal of these bikes. The KGT was introduced inthen quickly updated. The nomenclature is potentially confusing. The system on a two-wheel KGT obviously cannot do that, but it can help when the rear loses traction. The sensors determine when the front and rear wheels are moving at different speeds.

The system works best compensating for road hazards like wet pavement, slippery white lines and manhole covers, or gravel on the road. BMW pioneered antilock brakes for motorcycles; I consider it a must-have safety feature. The newest generation of antilock brakes has a more carlike feel, BMW said, in that it uses valves and hydraulics, instead of comparatively herky-jerky servo motors, to make the system activate more smoothly and predictably.

In this iteration of it, when the front brake lever is engaged, the front and rear brakes deploy in tandem to stop the bike; when the brake pedal is stepped on, only the rear brake is activated. This touring-sportbike hybrid handles as well as any two-wheeler of its ilk.

BMW pioneered this system nearly 20 years ago. In standard motorcycle construction the steering head and front wheel are connected in one unit that uses springs or shock absorbers to reduce wheel deflection that would affect steering. The Duolever front-wheel suspension separates steering and wheel-damping forces by a complex system of links, roller bearings and joints; the system results in ultraprecise steering unaffected by road jolts.

The Paralever allows the rear wheel to be mounted on a double-pivot swingarm, with an automobile-style driveshaft running through it, rather than a chain or belt as in most motorcycles. You might be wondering how much all this wizardry weighs down this bike.

The answer is not much.

Now the engineers need to turn their attention to lowering the seat height, one of my chronic gripes. Climbing aboard almost any BMW bike seems like mounting a thoroughbred race horse that is 17 hands high. Operator protection from the weather is quite good behind a fairing, which is as crisply creased as a paper airplane and seems about as aerodynamic. An electrically operated by a handlebar-mounted toggle windscreen allows nearly four inches of adjustment; lower it to set new speed records, raise it for maximum protection from wind, rain, cold and bugs.

Over all, the KGT is one of the smartest choices for a four-season bike. It is much easier to maneuver in this seminaked condition and takes up less room in the garage. Splitting the lanes through stopped freeway traffic is definitely a no-no with this wide load, so be prepared to sit in line with the four-wheelers.

For those occasions when you just want to hop on and ride off into the sunset, gridlock notwithstanding, range has been extended. You can easily go more than miles before needing to replenish the 6. But since it is a comparo, I also get to be pleasantly subjective in my estimation of the various individual functions of each.

These are two stupendously powerful and great-handling sport-touring motorcycles, either of which any enthusiast should be glad to have in his or her garage.

We did not include others for this test such as the Honda ST because they have not changed in a while, and this new pair is currently at the top of the power and performance heap and deserve a focused game of one-on-one. Both of these bikes are new forand there is no difference in the versions other than colors. Both have a wheelbase of close to 61 inches. Both have a curb weight of about pounds; these are big boys, and if one tips over in a parking lot, the picker-upper will know.

Of course the differences are quite fundamental as well. The most apparent difference is the aesthetic, and this is where subjectivity comes in. Perhaps the GT is sharper at slicing through the air at mph, but since I rarely indulge in such extreme behavior I prefer the more angular, more revealing FJR version. For me, throttle in hand, straight road ahead, once the tach reads over 6, on either of these machines, I am pretty much along for the ride. Both drivetrains use a hydraulically actuated multiplate clutch, and then have shaft drive to the rear wheel.But neglect it and alloy can corrode and the odd reliability glitch occurred on a handful of motorcycles.

Not a great experience initially but issues were resolved eventually. RAC warranty pointless though! It's perfectly capable of holding og R1's on acceleration. I've surprised a few when they saw the panniers and assumed it was a slow old tourer : I had a ZX12R as well as this at one time and being fair there was not a lot in it to separate them performance wise. I specified the higher screen from new and when fully extended 90 mph is relatively peaceful behind it.

The cruise control works brilliantly, only point I would make as a criticism is that the minimum the cruise can be set is 31mph. I'd like it to be settable at 30mph to make scamera dodging a little easier : The tyre pressure monitors work well and advise when pressures are getting a little low. The Automatic Stability Control works well, reduces power when it detects the rear wheel spinning up, which given it's hp is all too easy to do if you're cack handed.

I also found when coming over rises on a favourite stretch of road at 80 mph I used to tweak the throttle on previous bikes to get a small wheely over the crests. The ASC stops such tomfoolery and reduces power to bring the front wheel back to earth gently. The BMW tank back is not to firm a fit, bit disappointed really for a factory item, but it does clip on easily enough.

Electronic Suspension Adjustment is a godsend. Set it on comfort mode while traipsing up the motorway then when you arrive in the Highlands flick a button on the move and it'll tighten up into sports mode.

Brakes are incredible, very powerful, and semi linked, I originally was unsure but now I'm used to it I like the system. Backed up by the ABS they're a formidable stopping setup! Seat height is a tad lofty, I'm 32" inside leg and don't find it a problem. On mine they're equipped with rider and passenger seat heaters and combined with the heated grips they add incredibly to comfort on longer chilly rides.

At motorway speeds 75 to 80 on the GPS I was getting around 55mpg which is incredible. Especially compared to its peers! Allied to the 24 litre tank it gives a fantastic range. The DuoLever front end is simply stunning, almost zero dive from the front end under braking means at night the road stays well lit from the K's huge Xenon HID white headlight. There's little underseat storage but I have managed to store a tubeless repair kit in the seat cowling panels.

There's a little glove box in the fairing under the twistgrip. About the only complaints I'd have is theres a clunk into 1st gear, I'd really like to have had a radio option. There's certainly room under the left fairing panel. I looked there's a nice radio sized space there : Oh and for a bike that with all the toys cost over quid new a toolkit would be nice.

The supplied tork spanner and reversible screwdriver are a bit pants! Was looking to change bikes and since the k13 came out i felt now was a good time to pick up a low mileage k12 as dealers want to shift them to make room for the k13 sales.Picture credits - BMW.
